Quality Products, Sales, and Service Since 1949

Our story begins in Karajok, Norway where Marit Balto and her parents Anders and Marit raised reindeer near the Artic Circle. In 1898, the American government brought the Baltos and other herders to raise reindeer in Alaska. Marit met and married Oscar Nilsen, from Larvik, Norway and in 1910 they moved to Kitsap County. Their oldest son Carl delivered papers and started working in the Kingston Grocery store when he was 13. He bought out his boss after high school and renamed it "Your General Store." His younger brother Joe became his partner after World War II. They expanded into hardware and feed and at one time even had two gas stations. They worked long and hard hours to get ahead by selling and delivering groceries to their customers home. The Nilsen brothers became a success because they believed in customer service. In 1949, in addition to running Your General Store, the Nilsen brothers opened North Kitsap Appliance in downtown Poulsbo. The name was later changed to "The Brothers" to reflect the family connection. Both Carl and Joe's sons worked in the business over the years.

In the 1970's Joe moved to Chehalis and started a new appliance store. He ran Nilsen's Appliance of Chehalis with his sons until he retired in the early 1990's. Carl worked at The Brother's until he retired in the early 1980's. Bruce Nilsen took over the appliance store in Poulsbo with his wife Lynda and changed the Name to "Nilsen's Appliance Center" expanding to three locations. They opened a store in Port Orchard and in Silverdale. Bruce has carried on the tradition of hard work and customer service that came with growing up from his father and uncle Joe and has been successful over the years. Lynda was famous all over town for the 88 cent video rental and her many in store promotions. Nilsen's closed the Port Orchard store in 2003 and the Poulsbo store closed in 2007. We recently remodeled and moved our Silverdale store to a new location in the Marit Building on Silverdale Way.
